Modern Bedroom Inspired by Nature

I was inspired by a piece of art that immediately ignited intense feelings of euphoria. While visiting the Houston Museum of Natural Science with my husband I could not take my eyes off of this piece of petrified wood.  I enjoy the beautiful objects that God created and often try to implement natural elements in my home whenever I can. I have used plants, flowers, wood, natural cleaning products, nature images, recycled or up-cycled art.  Needless to say, I am still searching for how I can get my hands on this piece of art for my home.

According to Geology.com, Petrified wood is a fossil. It forms when plant material is buried by sediment and protected from decay by oxygen and organisms.

Petrified Wood

The bright colored material is hard like stone with rich hues intermixed in a beautiful collage. AHHH! Breathtaking. Well I was so inspired by this art,  that I decided to design a bedroom for someone who appreciated art and natural elements as much as I do. Here is a collage of my ideas and I even attached some links of the resources for you.  ENJOY!!

My Love for Lucite

Acrylic, Lucite, or Plexiglass is a a solid transparent plastic made of polymethyl methacrylate. It’s 8 times clearer than glass. It can be used in it’s clear state for any purpose. You can also paint it with acrylic paint.

I am truly enamored of all the beautiful furniture and products being produced now with this material. You can decorate with acrylic in almost any decor scheme. It’s non invading and also has a persona of it’s own.

The furniture was introduced in the 60’s and became popular again with the “Ghost Chair”.

The Ghost Chair was designed by Philippe Starck to resemble the Louis XV chair but with a modern twist. I’m 90% sure that you have seen this chair in person or via social media because it is so popular.

Have you used acrylic/lucite furniture in your home or office? I would love to see it.

DIY Mirror Frame to Headboard

I love garage sales…. but I must admit I hate getting up at the crack of dawn on a Saturday to go and snag the best item before the other early birds. I decided that I would go to a popular neighborhoods bi-annual sale. You could spend a whole day shopping, treasure hunting at this sale. They give out maps ahead of time so you can plan where you want to go depending on what street has the items you are looking for. I decided just to go without doing any research this time. I wanted to just have fun and look. Sometimes the best items are ones that many people overlook because it’s damaged or doesn’t look like a treasured find.

So at the end of my hunting around noon, I saw this frame laying on the grass in a homeowners yard. I asked, “How much?” She said, “Name your price.”  She was pretty much giving it away.  The owner said  it was a beautiful mirror that she had in her entry that fell and shattered. All that was left was the frame. She didn’t give me a chance to respond and said, “Two dollars!” So of course I bought it.

Anyway I saw it and thought..hmmm..I could probably do something with it, I just didn’t know what that “something” was at the time.   It sat in my garage for a year.

So a year later I finally found a use for it. I had wanted to make a DIY headboard for the longest time but I wasn’t inspired to tackle the project yet. Then I saw this headboard from Horchow and decided to use my frame to make something similar.

FrmHorchow.BristolTuftedHeadboardSteps:

1. I glued the frame back together and wood spackled all of the missing carved details into the corners.

2. I painted and antiqued the frame in a silver finish. The existing finish would have been perfect but since I had to spackle some missing details, it needed a new coat of paint.

3. I purchased particle board and had it cut to size of the inside of the frame.

4. I measured and marked the location of holes for buttons and drilled the holes.

5. I spray adhered batting to the board to keep it in place. I then used a screw driver to punch holes thru the batting (this makes the tufting so much easier).

6. I then stapled my finished fabric to the particle board.

7. Then I tufted my headboard by using fishing wire to pull  the buttons as tight as I could to create the desired look. I stapled my fishing wire in a zig-zag pattern on the other side to keep in in place.

Image below shows the batting facing the backside of the frame but I was just checking to make sure that I cut enough batting before I sprayed it to the particle board.

Living Room Vision Board/Gallery Furniture Contest

Hello there! Thank you for stopping by today! This month I decided to enter a contest with Gallery Furniture. It is a Pinterest/Instagram contest where you draw a favorite furniture item that is in stock.  This is a local store with a lot of history in Houston and philanthropic services in the area. For the last 20+ years, Gallery Furniture has given away house full’s of furniture to families in need. And this year the owner, Jim ‘Mattress Mack’ McIngvale made headlines for his Super Bowl contest. He vowed to refund customers who purchased $6,000 worth of furniture if the Seahawks won.  Well as you know, Seattle won and there were a lot of customers who entered this contest (I didn’t.. but boy do I wish I had) and Mattress Mack had to pay almost $7M back!!

Our family loves this store because of  their community service, great customer service, fun sales/contests and the wide variety of items and design styles available.  We have several items in our home from Gallery Furniture and I recently won 2nd Place in their 2013 Design Contest.

Shopping for furniture can be a daunting task but this store makes shopping an enjoyable experience. Inside the store’s original location there are parrots, monkeys, and a playground for the kids. Water, cookies and ice cream are provided every time you shop. Sometimes they will have pizza and other foods for special events.  Once you have found that perfect item, they will deliver it the same day, so no need to wait! Check out their website and even if you aren’t in the Houston area, they can deliver it. Gallery Furniture delivers regularly all across Texas, and has delivered as far away as Maui, Hawaii.  Without further ado, here is my design entry. Tell me what you think or let me know you need assistance with a room in your home by commenting!
